Coffee Talk: Enjoying the Harvest - Part 4

This season of harvest is bright and fruitful, both in our lives as parents and as we approach the season of Thanksgiving. Not only have I learned to see the harvest moments in our lives, but I've also learned to count our blessings, naming them one by one in my journal. The list is growing, right along with my faith.

This "enjoying the harvest" does not just apply to our children's growth and education, by the way. Try to take time to take a walk -- really walking, not just speeding through another task. Notice the color of the sky, and the birds that you see -- can you identify them? And when you are making that apple butter in a slow cooker this year, don't forget to add some savory spices and then enjoy the taste on hot buttered biscuits. Put on some classical music and really listen to how lifting Mozart can be with your morning coffee...a much better way to start the day than listening to the morning news. In other words, YOU have got to slow down and "smell the roses" too. As they say around my house, "when mama ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy!" And I'm trying to remedy that, working on it on a daily basis.

It is my prayer that these Enjoying the Harvest posts have helped you see that the fruits of our labors are ongoing and lifelong. The harvest is never-ending, and we need to enjoy the harvest moments, right in the midst of the chores and labors of love in teaching and learning and sharing in our family lives. Live, really live, each day that God gives you.

May you have a bountiful and joyous harvest season, and may you find peace in the quiet moments that you can catch in the mayhem and noise of family life!

Blessings,
Amanda B.

Building Traditions While They Learn

The first holiday season of our homeschooling years was such a game changer at our house. In previous years, we had stayed busy, rushing from school plays and events to church activities, and the holidays went by in a blur. As a new homeschooling mom, I was determined that we were going to learn about the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the history and meaning of each one, as well as spend time together as a family, building traditions, finding ways to help others, and making memories.

You can do the same thing with your family! Spend time investigating all the wonders of autumn and then get ready for our third annual Thanksgiving Facebook Co-op. Learn more about this co-op here, and then make plans to join us! Connect with other families as we explore this traditional holiday - the history, geography, Pilgrims, and Native Americans! You'll be inspired by the insights and practical ideas of other homeschoolers just like you!

Blessings,
Amanda B.

PS: The Thanksgiving and Christmas unit studies are on sale for only $5 right now (sale ends 10/19), and they each have 4 weeks of lessons for grades K-12. That's 8 weeks of learning adventures and memory-making moments for just $10! Enjoy!

Modeling Clay & Thanksgiving Adventures?

While we were studying the Thanksgiving unit study when the children were younger, we would take packages of inexpensive modeling clay and everyone would sit around the kitchen table, night after night, slowly but surely creating our own version of Plymouth Plantation. The children created tiny figures, houses, stockade walls, a lake, and even a few fishing poles! The conversations and sharing were unforgettable, and I treasure those days and memories. ;)

We assembled the village on a large piece of freezer paper centered on the table, and eventually this became our Thanksgiving centerpiece. You can do the same thing with a cookie sheet covered with foil or freezer paper, and it will be easier to move their creation from one location to another.

So, pick up a few packages of nontoxic inexpensive modeling clay at your local dollar store, and get ready for some fun! Some of our best homeschooling memories have been made with projects just like this, gathered round the kitchen table, laughing and talking and sharing.

Blessings,
Amanda B.

Getting Ready For Thanksgiving Adventures

With the weather turning cooler and the leaves starting to turn beautiful colors, it's time to look ahead to Thanksgiving learning adventures! Here are a few tips to help get ready:
  1. In the Thanksgiving Unit Study, go through the book resource lists and choose a few that sound interesting and match with the reading levels of your children. Don't forget to choose one or two for family reading - it's a wonderful time to read together, with cups of hot apple cider and bowls of popcorn.
  2. Go through the Family Project Ideas in the study, and choose one or two that "fit" your family.
  3. On your nature walks, begin gathering things like pine cones, acorns, and other things that you can use on Thanksgiving projects.
  4. Pick up things like construction paper, glue sticks, and modeling clay at a local dollar store - it's always good to have a ready supply in this season.
In just a few weeks, we'll be starting our free Thanksgiving Co-op on our Facebook page. Make sure to sign up here, and mark it on your calendar - October 28th, the fun begins!

Blessings,
Amanda B.

The USAB Easter Co-op is Around the Corner!

The USAB Easter co-op is almost here! I hope you are as excited about it as we are. Starting March 4th,  we will be sharing ideas and encouraging one another on our Facebook page, as we go through the Easter unit study together.

Of all the people we want our children to know, Jesus Christ is the most important. It is essential that they have a thorough understanding of the one who bought our salvation. As we celebrate Easter, this study gives us the perfect opportunity to instill in our children a better understanding of our faith and the reason for our joy during this season.

The holidays of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter or Resurrection Day are included in the study, as well as the events leading up to Jesus' ascension to heaven. The study includes the people and places involved, helping your students investigate and understand the history and meaning of these events.

Teach your children about Jesus, salvation, and love. Make some hot cross buns, pack a blanket, and head for the sunrise service—it will take on a whole new meaning this year! Easter is on sale just in time for our co-op,  for only $6!*

Athletes in the Bible is also at a special price this week:

Did you know that Jesus was an athlete? Athletes in the Bible is an interesting adventure into the Word for a new look at men who were not always noted for their athletic skills. While their names might be familiar, get ready for a fresh new look at these amazing men and how they needed athletic abilities and strong faith in their efforts to obey God. Just like you, they struggled with all kinds of temptation, challenges, and trials, yet they still succeeded in following God’s will.

Athletes in the Bible spotlights:

  • David
  • Elijah
  • Samson
  • Peter
  • Paul
  • Jesus

Students will be introduced to the athletic abilities and character traits of these men of God as they follow them across the Holy Land, tracking the paths of their lessons and their lives. Throughout this study your students will learn Scripture that will equip and strengthen them for athletic pursuits and life itself. Athletes in the Bible is on sale now for only $7!*

*Sale prices go through 3/2/13.

Delicious Traditions

"Around this time of year, my precious mother-in-law, Patsy Clark, gathered with her friends to make batches and batches of homemade sugar cookies. Every time our family makes these cookies, including when we gather with some of our friends for a fun-filled cookie baking day, we are reminded of so many special memories of Nana Clark. Oh, how we miss her, but we are very thankful for her example and legacy of faith in the Savior!"   Laura Clark

Homemade Sugar Cookies

1 lb butter
4 eggs
4 cups sugar
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tbl pure almond extract
2 oz pure vanilla
flour to stiffen--about 10 cups
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in a little hot water

Cream together butter, eggs, sugar, almond and vanilla extracts. In a separate bowl, add cream of tartar to flour. Gradually add flour to butter/sugar mixture and mix well. After 4-5 cups of flour has been added, mix in baking soda/hot water mixture. Continue to add in flour (@9-10 cups--don't make dough too stiff).

It's easier to work with the dough after it has chilled in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Roll out cookie dough (we prefer to roll dough thin) on parchment paper, cut with cookie cutters, peel away extra dough, and decorate with sprinkles. Bake cookies in 350-375 oven until lightly brown, about 7-9 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on cookie rack then store in air tight container or cookie jar.

Which Holiday does EVERYONE Celebrate?

Each of us has a birthday, and birthdays are such special times to children—why not use the opportunity to help them learn more about themselves and their own history while preparing for a fun celebration of their very special day?

When I was a child, my mother put such effort into making all of her children feel so unique and special on their birthdays—and it was truly a labor of love. From the special dinner menu that we each selected to the many other ways that she made us realize just how special we were as individuals and as part of a family, Mom helped us develop self-confidence as well as a better understanding of the importance of each family member.

At our house, birthday celebrations are very special events. On each birthday, the child is made to feel like a celebrity—receiving gifts, breakfast in bed, special treatment, and time off from chores! We take the entire week around each birthday, allowing each child to have “his/her week” to celebrate. Over the years, this tradition has become firmly established and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole family. It has provided fun and renewed confidence at times when it was needed. The anticipation of birthdays is a time-honored tradition now, and one that we all enjoy. From making piƱatas to all kinds of zany fun, we have been blessed to create some amazing memories while building up the children and showing them just how special they are to us!Want to know how to get Birthday Bonanza Download N Go for FREE?

If you purchase 10 titles in July, we'll give you a FREE title of your choice in August - including Birthday Bonanza (which is not available individually - it is included in our One Year DNG Package).  If you purchase 15 titles, you get 2 FREE titles!

You don't want to wait...our Summer Savings Event will be ending in just a few more days on 7/31!
