Unit Studies - Help is on the Way!

Unit Studies.  Need help getting started . . .  Help is on the way!

One of the most amazing discoveries that I made as a homeschooling mom was realizing that one of our children was an over-the-top auditory learner. He could remember ANYTHING that he heard, which can be good AND bad.  :) He was a good reader, but if he could listen to whatever he was studying, he had an amazing level of retention. I hadn’t realized it, but I had been adjusting the way that I interacted with him accordingly over the years. In other words, I had figured out that if I wanted him to remember something, writing it on a note and sticking it on his breakfast plate had no lasting impact. However, if I made him look me in the eye as I told him what I needed him to do—bingo!

Take a moment and think about what type of learner you are, and then which type of learner each of your children might be. Interesting, isn’t it? At our house, we are all quite different in our learning styles. One child loves to take notes, another hates to take notes but has complete recall of spoken words, and still another learns best if he is actively in motion and involved in the process of creating something. I had to teach to several types of learners at the same time, and unit studies certainly made that possible.

I’ve tried to cover much of what I’ve learned in my book Unit Studies 101, and it’s on sale right now through 7/27/13. If you want to know how to use unit studies, what I know about unit studies, or even how to create your own unit studies, this is the book. This week we also have the ever-popular, and interactive, Unit Study Journal on sale, so that you can have a reusable record keeping tool for study after study.

Check them out, and let me know if you have any questions along the way!

Blessings,
Amanda B.

Discover the Human Body!

The Discover the Human Body collection in the Download N Go series for grades K - 4 covers science, history, geography, and much more! This new series of discovery has become a big hit and you can get both titles for just $5 each, through 7/13/13!

God designed the human body in ways that are astounding—so complex that we can’t begin to fathom the details He took care of as He created man. Of these details, our senses are the ones that enable us to interact with the world that He made, allowing us to taste, touch, see, hear, and smell. Each of these senses is a gift, and together they make a perfect topic of discovery for children.

In Discover the Senses, your child will investigate a new sense each day, learning what it is and how it works, as well as what it does for him. He will learn what impacts that particular sense; for example, without light, we have no sight! He will also learn about limitations of that sense, and how modern innovation has helped overcome some of the restrictions. And he will meet some of history’s heroes, such as Louis Braille, who helped along the way. Each day, your student will explore and investigate, creating and adding more learning components to his Discover the Senses lapbook—building a wonderful reminder of all that he is learning to be enjoyed for years to come.

Discover the Senses is a terrific adventure, from taste tests to smell experiments, this study will capture their imagination, teach them about how wonderfully they are made, and help them learn more about their Creator as they travel the path of the study.

Check out the Discover the Senses lapbook:

Discover the Brain is  getting rave reviews! Did you know that:

You have almost 45 MILES of nerves?

She will learn about the amazing capacity of our brain–for memory, thought processing, and body control. Your child will meet one amazing person each day–the Brainiac of the Day! From Einstein to Ben Carson, MD, these people demonstrate just how much can be accomplished when the mind is put to work.

Tell Your Stories for Generations to Come!

Do you have boxes of pictures and mementos, loosely stuffed baby books, and photo envelopes with the negatives sliding all over in the back of the closet?

These bits and pieces of the past are part of your family legacy, and you can use this four-week unit study to assemble scrapbooks that will help tell your stories for generations to come. From your mother's cheerleading picture to the tassel from your own high school graduation, all of these have a story to tell. Use this study to prepare a lasting library of the history of your family!

What a fun summer project for the whole family!

• Did you know that Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain were avid scrapbookers?
• Did you know that girls would include hair weavings in their scrapbooks of the 1800s?
• Did you know that Mark Twain probably made more money from a scrapbooking invention than he did from royalties on his books?

Even as you read this, I am pulling out pile after pile of pictures and memorabilia—assembling the piles in a corner of the family room. Using this unit study, we will organize and assemble records of our adventures. After 20+ years of marriage and three children, I have a LOT to organize, and so much to share with our children! Come along and join me—we will tackle this project together!

Scrapbooking is on sale now through 7/6/13 for just $6!

Adventures in Bravery, Courage, and Honesty . . . Heroes for Today!

Who were your heroes when you were a child? I had all kinds of heroes--biblical heroes like Daniel, Esther, Joseph, and others, as well as more modern heroes like Daniel Boone, Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, and more. They were important to me because they were real people who had lived extraordinary lives.

While raising our children, I noticed that they didn't have the same kinds of heroes I had. Their heroes came in plastic shell packages from the store, wearing different colored capes and not connected with anyone who had lived a life of real adventure and challenges. That bothered me, so I set out to help them discover "real" heroes.

This new series, Heroes for Today, contains stories from long ago which I have updated for the next generation. These stories capture the imagination, while reinforcing important character traits--courage, ambition, perseverance, humility, caring for others, responsibility, faith, conviction, and more.
