Come On and Join Us in the Olympics 2012 Co-op!

Welcome to our Olympics 2012 Facebook Co-op. I’m thrilled to see you here! Today begins our two-week adventure into studying the Olympics and all that they hold, and these games are already off to a fantastic start. Did you see the opening ceremonies? Fantastic fireworks, music, theatrics, and so much more to get the games off on the right foot in the United Kingdom.

We’ve got two weeks of exploration and investigation planned, so keep your globes and world maps on hand. If you were like me, the opening ceremonies began the search for all of the different participating countries—their flags, location, government, and more. Now we continue that international interest as we learn about so many different sports and the athletes who are competing!

As a special new feature for our co-op, I am thrilled to announce that we have discovered a fascinating new website and app that make learning Scripture for a unit study a challenging exercise for kids of all ages!

Scripture Typer has formed a special group just for our Olympics adventure, and daily Scripture memorization passages will be posted each day to add depth and meaning to the Olympics study. Enjoy this new feature—we can’t wait to begin it ourselves!

Again, thanks for joining us here for the co-op. You should have seen the look on my mom’s face when I told her that I would be studying the Olympics with almost 5,000 of my closest friends!

Blessings,

Amanda B.

PS - It's not too late to join the fun - Olympics 2012 is just $5 this week!  Download the FREE Olympics 2012 Lapbook  and  Join us on the USAB Facebook Page!

Taking Care of You - Part Six

Welcome back to our “Taking Care of YOU” series. This is part 6. . If you missed Part 1, 2, 3 or 4 please click on these links—Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5—to read those posts before continuing here.

6.      Keep a journal, and write in it every day.

Not only does journaling help you see all that has been accomplished and record the daily happenings, but the simple act of journaling provides a constant, steady reminder of the passing of time. As homeschoolers, we tend to get wrapped up in marking time by years until graduation instead of enjoying the value of each and every day. Keeping a journal is a wonderful way to help you cherish every precious day.

Stay tuned right here for the next “Taking Care of YOU” post in just a few days!

PS - Have you RSVP'd for the Olympics 2012 Facebook Co-op?  It begins Monday, July 30th! Don't miss the chance to share this International Celebration with us!

Which Holiday does EVERYONE Celebrate?

Each of us has a birthday, and birthdays are such special times to children—why not use the opportunity to help them learn more about themselves and their own history while preparing for a fun celebration of their very special day?

When I was a child, my mother put such effort into making all of her children feel so unique and special on their birthdays—and it was truly a labor of love. From the special dinner menu that we each selected to the many other ways that she made us realize just how special we were as individuals and as part of a family, Mom helped us develop self-confidence as well as a better understanding of the importance of each family member.

At our house, birthday celebrations are very special events. On each birthday, the child is made to feel like a celebrity—receiving gifts, breakfast in bed, special treatment, and time off from chores! We take the entire week around each birthday, allowing each child to have “his/her week” to celebrate. Over the years, this tradition has become firmly established and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole family. It has provided fun and renewed confidence at times when it was needed. The anticipation of birthdays is a time-honored tradition now, and one that we all enjoy. From making piƱatas to all kinds of zany fun, we have been blessed to create some amazing memories while building up the children and showing them just how special they are to us!Want to know how to get Birthday Bonanza Download N Go for FREE?

If you purchase 10 titles in July, we'll give you a FREE title of your choice in August - including Birthday Bonanza (which is not available individually - it is included in our One Year DNG Package).  If you purchase 15 titles, you get 2 FREE titles!

You don't want to wait...our Summer Savings Event will be ending in just a few more days on 7/31!

Christmas and Traditions While Homeschooling

The month of December is a very special time at our place! When we began homeschooling, it was a natural thing to spend the entire month of December on a study of the real meaning of Christmas.

We spent many hours gathered in the living room, reading the Bible and learning about the prophecies of His birth and how they were fulfilled. The whole family worked on projects together—things that would help others. From cookie trays and baby blankets to quilts for the abused children’s shelter, we all created and helped as we read and listened to a huge array of great books. We read Jotham’s Journey, The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, One Wintry Night, and many more. We learned so much about God’s plan, His love, and how to love and serve others.

We also formed some long-lasting family traditions during those Decembers, traditions that we continue to this day as the kids come home from all over the place and bring friends along with them. Their dad has always been the best cook in the house, and he began having them help him make all kinds of Christmas goodies back in the early days of our homeschooling. They would all take part in this big, messy, totally fun event, creating treats for neighbors and friends near and far.

We had one craft project that we worked on each night, gathered around the kitchen table. I will never forget the year that we painted small plaster of paris houses to form a Christmas village—great conversations and loads of laughter. Every year had a new project that matched the varying ages and skill levels, and each time we made some fantastic memories.

I hope that you and your crew can have a Christmas season to remember this year. These ARE the good old days for your children!

Blessings,
Amanda B.

Thanksgiving and Modeling Clay and So Much More

Best homeschooling memories ever? That is always such a tough question for me! Over the years, we have made so many fun and memorable discoveries together, and the holidays are at the heart of some of our favorite memories. Here at the Bennett house, the holidays are anticipated and enjoyed with family and friends and were a part of our homeschooling days every year.

My first holiday unit study was for Thanksgiving, and it was written just for our children many years ago. I was planning to take the month of November off to dive into the meaning of this holiday with them, as well as take some time to get ready for a big family gathering for the holiday itself.

Let’s just say that the whole ide
a was a huge hit, and we celebrated and studied Thanksgiving the same way every year after that. I will never forget the looks on their faces when I pulled out those packs of modeling clay from the local dollar store and told them to build a model of Plymouth Plantation for the kitchen table centerpiece. It became a huge endeavor that we all enjoyed, and we learned so much from that activity. Who knew fishing poles could be made from modeling clay? :)

So we have gathered together over the years to study the Pilgrims, the Wampanoag, Miles Standish, William Bradford, and many others. We learned about the hardships the Pilgrims they faced that first winter and their willingness to share what they had. So many dinner table conversations were touched with what they learned, and our holidays have been so much more meaningful because of the lessons.

Enjoy the holidays, and use them as a time for learning, loving, and building your own family traditions and foundation. It is time you won’t regret spending—time that you can’t get back again once it has passed.

Blessings,

Amanda B.

Taking Care of You - Part Five

Welcome back to our “Taking Care of YOU” series. This is part 5. . If you missed Part 1, 2, 3 or 4  please click on these links—Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4—to read those posts before continuing here.

5.    Try to get up early every morning to have some quiet time before everyone wakes up. Read, pray, listen to the silence—whatever refreshes you.

I know it seems impossible to even consider finding time for yourself with soccer practice, ballet lessons, and support group events, not to mention the orthodontist and pediatrician! A friend once told me that her mother had taught her to write a check into her savings account every payday, even for a small amount, before paying any other bills. This way, she would get her priorities in order and build a good habit early in life. Well, this idea can also apply to our own personal daily and weekly schedules.

This time is so important, yet so easily sacrificed, when other "more important" things crop up. Just as you try not to interfere or make demands on a working spouse's daily work routine, protect this time for yourself as part of your "work" schedule. Block off your time on the calendar FIRST, and then add all of the other appointments and demands later. Preserve your appointments for yourself. Protect this time and use it for your own well-being.

When I was young, I remember my mother getting up before daylight, quietly going to the kitchen, and making coffee. She would sit at the kitchen table with her coffee, looking out the back window into the woods, enjoying the silence for a while before all of the children woke up and broke into her quiet time. I never understood just how important this time was until we had our own children, and now I appreciate her exasperated look when one of us would awaken early and wander out before daylight!

Stay tuned right here for the next “Taking Care of YOU” post in just a few days!

Blessings,

Amanda B.

You say, “I don't have time to read.” Consider getting some audio books from the library or through online sources such as Audible.

Perhaps you aren't sure of audio books that you can listen to while driving the children back and forth to various activities. We have thoroughly enjoyed some great audiobooks in the car: Cheaper By the Dozen, The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, The Hobbit, Danger to Windward, the Mitford series, and so many more. Try to get the unabridged versions so that you can hear the author's words in whole, without losing any of them in the editing process.

Let the Learning Begin!

Here come the athletes with their flags flying! Their hopes and dreams are still brightly shining stars in their eyes!

If your family is like ours, these fun times and competitions are looked forward to, planned into the schedule, and watched closely as the games unfold. The character traits of the athletes come into focus now as the games begin and progress, and the lessons can be priceless—lessons in perseverance, courage, faith, and persistence.

From learning the flags of each country (check out - World Flags Match 'Em Up History & Geography App for your iPhone or iPad to keep it fun!) to learning the names and countries of the top contenders in each sport, we approach the games as a wide-open door of learning about international athletes and events. Create posters to track your favorite country, team, or athletes, and let the games begin!

Another fun activity is to check out the food from various countries that you and your crew are following from around the world. Have different dinner menus during the Olympics, letting the kids choose items from a particular country each night. They will learn about foods from around the world, and it’s just one more sense (taste) that helps cement the learning process.(The Passport Geography Series is full of fun recipes from around the world!)

Enjoy these games with the whole family! Sure, there might be some long hours and late night events, but they are so much fun, and the memories are priceless. I’ll be right there with you, staying up late and cheering them on!

Blessings,
Amanda B.

Taking Care of You - Part Three

Welcome back to our Taking Care of You series. This is part 3, if you missed Parts 1 and 2 please click on these links, Part 1, Part 2, to read those posts before continuing here.

Today I’m going to expand on the idea from hint #2:

3. Check out videos from the library that interest YOU--travel videos for places that you have dreamed of visiting (Scotland, Australia, Great Britain, Africa, etc.), or perhaps videos that teach things like painting, quilting, cooking, and more.

Here's some travel inspiration for you from our Passport Geography  & Download N Go Expedition Series:

Ah, fascinating Leaning Tower of Pisa—what a sight to see! Did you know this tilting tower was intended as a bell tower for the nearby cathedral, and it started leaning shortly after construction began in 1173?

Stretching nearly 1,000 feet into the sky, the Eiffel tower is an impressive landmark in the heart of beautiful Paris!

The rocky coastline of western France sure is beautiful, isn't it? This is one of those places that shows us just how amazing God's creation can be, and it reminds me that “...God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise.” Psalm 47:7

As soon as you see it, Mont-Saint-Michel in France is a place that captures your attention!

From castles and cliffs to busy waterfront cities, Germany is a marvelous place to explore.

A beautiful sky, a stunning sunrise, and treetops that stretch as far as the eye can see. Ah, now that's a gorgeous view from the land down under—beam me there!

You might be surprised how refreshing something so simple can be! Stay tuned right here for the next Taking Care of YOU post in just a few days!

Blessings,

Amanda B.

Liquor Boxes and a Visit from the Pastor

One summer, when we were creatively learning about gardening and plants, we decided to have the children do this very cool experiment. They would start a few bean plants in paper cups on the windowsill. When the plants were several inches tall, they would place the paper cups in a big box that had dividers, tape the box closed, and then we would cut a small hole in the end of the box that was farthest from the young plant. They were trying to see if the plants would grow around the dividers and find a way to get to the sunlight coming in the hole at the far end of the box.

Simple, right? Well, the best boxes to use for these experiments were liquor boxes. Yes, you heard me right—big, bulky liquor boxes with very thick corrugated dividers were perfect for challenging the young bean plants. So after a special trip to obtain the boxes, the kids had a blast getting their own boxes set up and carefully placed on the front porch. It was a colorful arrangement, to say the least.

A few days later, our pastor dropped by for a visit. When I answered the door, I couldn’t figure out why he kept staring at the other end of the porch, not really looking at me at all. Hmmm. Oh, the liquor boxes! Yes, I did have quite a time explaining all of the boxes and the experiment and, well, homeschooling. It was all good, and that’s the most interesting way homeschooling has ever made its way into a conversation for me!

Celebrating the Fourth of July!

It can be hotter than anything here in Tennessee on Independence Day, and I mean HOT! We get those afternoon pop-up thunderstorms, making the humidity so high that it feels like you are swimming instead of walking. However, no matter how hot or steamy, we try to make the day one for the memory books.

In our little town, there will be a morning parade with both fire trucks, the ambulance, the local constable, and various floats from local businesses and churches, all pulled by tractor.

The light posts are hung with American flags, and red, white, and blue balloons are in the hands of kids of all ages. The shady spots by the courthouse are filled with lawn chairs and folding tables manned by local churches, making and selling homemade ice cream and lemonade. Politicians are handing out paper campaign fans, and there are babies asleep and drooling in strollers all over the place.

You can feel the love and the deep appreciation for our town and our country. Priceless memories—well worth the sweat and insect repellent—will be made. Trust me, head out and find a local celebration. Take your camera and your kids, and simply enjoy being together and being a part of this great country. And stick around . . . the evening fireworks are GREAT!

Happy Independence Day!
